Peer-reviewed research shows that car sharing greatly reduces environmentally harmful emissions like CO₂ and methane. People who share their cars also tend to drive less, which encourages a shift in how we move — toward walking, cycling, or using public transportation.
For instance, a study by U.S. researchers Donna Chen and Kara Kockelman found that, on average, Americans who joined a car-sharing community reduced their transportation-related energy use and greenhouse gas emissions by 51%.

Much of a modern car’s environmental impact actually comes from its production and end-of-life phases — especially true for low-emission cars. So, the fewer cars we own collectively, the less environmental harm we cause.
According to the European Parliament, the majority of CO₂ emissions from cars powered by renewable energy come from production and disposal stages. Even traditional gasoline and diesel cars generate about 20% of their lifetime emissions during those same phases.
Another often-overlooked downside of car ownership is its effect on urban livability. Cities are growing, and there simply isn’t room for more cars. Construction projects must include mandatory parking spaces, which adds costs and ultimately increases housing prices.
