Today, we launched a new service called GoMore+. This means good news for everyone who wants to save on driving costs and needs a car more often than once every couple of months: renting GoMore cars has just become cheaper than owning a car!

In this post, we’ll explain what GoMore+ is, why we developed it, and how our Plus members can now drive more affordably than ever before.

The facts first: GoMore+ is a new subscription-based service that we have been developing for a long time with great care. That’s why we are beyond excited to finally share it with our member community.

In short, this is what it’s about:

Why did we develop GoMore+?

We want to make car sharing on GoMore a clearly more affordable option compared to car ownership. Cities are filling up with cars, and existing cars remain parked for over 90% of the time.

Until now, the biggest obstacle to the widespread adoption of car sharing has been—surprise, surprise—money. Based on research conducted by the Finnish Transport Authority and GoMore’s own member surveys, it is clear that car sharing must be cheaper than owning a car before it can become a real alternative to ownership.

However, with GoMore+, it now looks like rational city dwellers who consider their driving costs carefully will no longer find car ownership more economical than renting GoMore+ cars for their varying needs.

At the end of this blog, we’ll provide more reasoning for this argument, so stay with us!

What does GoMore+ mean?

In addition to our free version, GoMore rental members will now have access to two subscription-based services that offer fixed discounts on GoMore rentals. We priced the services so that, in most cases, GoMore+ members save back their subscription fee with just one rental per month.

The GoMore+ options are:

  • GoMore+10 is for those who need a car 1–2 days per month. The subscription costs €5 per month, providing a 10% discount on all rentals. The subscription pays for itself after 1–2 rental days per month, depending on the car you choose and the duration of the rental.

  • GoMore+20 is for those who need a car for 2 or more days per month. The subscription costs €15 per month and gives a 20% discount on every rental. On a monthly basis, the subscription usually pays for itself after just two rental days!

Will the old GoMore, which already offers the most affordable car-sharing prices in Finland, remain free?

Yes, it will, and the launch of GoMore+ will not affect the already low prices on our platform. If you need a car less than once a month, you will likely still benefit most from using our free version—unless you want to take advantage of the high discount rates, for example, for a longer summer trip!

So, would renting cars as a GoMore+ member now be cheaper than owning a car?

For a large part of Finns, it would. Let’s take a closer look:

  • According to an expert from Statistics Finland, even with a conservative estimate, cars in Finland remain unused for over 90% of the time. On average, a Finnish car owner only uses their car for a few hours a day.

  • According to a study conducted by the Automobile Federation and compiled by YLE titled "How much does driving cost," a Finnish car owner pays about €10 per day for a basic gasoline car valued under €20,000—or approximately €300 per month (excluding fuel costs).

  • The same study states that a car in the €20,000–30,000 price range costs its owner €13 per day, or €400 per month.

  • For cars in the €40,000–50,000 price range, the daily cost is about €17, totaling €510 per month.

Note: This study is from 2018, so given the rise in interest rates and overall price levels, these numbers are slightly conservative. But we’ll stick to them since there aren’t newer comprehensive studies available on the cost of car ownership in Finland.

Based on these studies, with the GoMore+20 package, you could rent, at the cost of ownership (i.e., €10 per day), a VW Polo for ten separate one-day rentals per month (~30% of all days) or a Toyota Aygo for nearly two weeks straight (~46% of all days). You could also rent the Polo 16 different days per month for 4 hours at a time.

If you’d prefer a mid-priced, relatively new €20,000–30,000 car, which costs an owner about €13 per day, the GoMore+20 membership would allow you to drive, for example, a Hyundai Ioniq hybrid for 12 separate days per month—and you’d still have some money left over. Alternatively, you could rent a 2022 Kia Rio for 14 consecutive days.

For more premium €40,000–50,000 cars, a smart choice would be a well-equipped electric car. In this segment, you could drive a 2023 Skoda Enyaq with the GoMore+20 package for eight separate one-day rentals per month or four Friday-to-Sunday weekend getaways!

By the way, picking up and returning these GoMore Keyless cars is easy via the GoMore app—without any of the worries or hassles of car ownership.
